Does India Have Michelin Star Restaurants?

When most people think of Michelin-starred restaurants, they think of the likes of French cities such as Paris, Nice and Cannes. However, in recent years there has been a growing interest in the concept of Michelin stars being awarded to restaurants around the world. India is no exception and there are now several restaurants that have been awarded the highly coveted Michelin stars.

One such restaurant is Indian Accent in New Delhi, which was awarded its first Michelin star in 2016. The restaurant is renowned for its modern interpretation of traditional Indian cuisine and its innovative use of ingredients from across the country.

Dishes include tandoori murgi (tandoori chicken), palak chaat (spinach fritters) and kulfi falooda (Indian ice cream).

The second Indian restaurant to receive a Michelin star is Gaggan in Bangkok, Thailand. The restaurant is run by celebrated Indian chef Gaggan Anand and specializes in progressive Indian cuisine. Dishes on offer include sea urchin with coconut foam, duck liver with barley risotto and pork ribs with tamarind glaze.

In 2018, two more Indian restaurants were awarded stars; Bukhara at the ITC Maurya hotel in New Delhi and Varq at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai. Both restaurants are renowned for their traditional North Indian cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients to create dishes such as dal Bukhara (black lentil curry) and biryani Varq (slow-cooked spiced rice).
