Mexico is a country renowned for its vibrant culture and delicious cuisine. The country has an impressive variety of dishes, ranging from traditional Mexican favorites like tacos and enchiladas to international fare like pizza and sushi. But does Mexico have Michelin stars?
The short answer is no, Mexico does not have any Michelin stars. Michelin stars are awarded by the French tire company and restaurant guide publisher, Michelin Group. A restaurant must meet certain criteria in order to be awarded a star, including exceptional quality of food, mastery of technique, and consistency in both service and presentation.
In order to be eligible for a Michelin star rating, the restaurant must be located in one of the countries where the guide is published–which currently includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Austria, Sweden, Portugal and Japan. Unfortunately, Mexico is not on that list.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t excellent restaurants in Mexico offering high-quality cuisine. In fact some of these restaurants are so good that they have been given awards from other organizations such as Wine Spectator or Gourmet Magazine.
For example in 2018 Piaf Restaurant in Mexico City was awarded with a “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator magazine for its excellent wine list. In addition there are many highly acclaimed Mexican chefs such as Enrique Olvera who have gained worldwide recognition for their work.
So while Mexico may not have any Michelin star restaurants at this time it certainly doesn’t lack quality cuisine or talented chefs! As more Mexican restaurants gain international recognition who knows?
Maybe one day we will see some Michelin stars appear south of the border! Conclusion: While Mexico does not currently have any Michelin stars it does boast some excellent restaurants offering high-quality cuisine that have been recognized by other organizations such as Wine Spectator or Gourmet Magazine. With talented chefs gaining international recognition it may only be a matter of time before we see some Michelin stars appear south of the border!
