How Many Michelin Star Restaurants Are There in the UK?

The Michelin Guide is an annual guidebook published by the French tyre company, Michelin. It rates restaurants based on their quality of food, atmosphere and service. Since the early 1900s, Michelin has been awarding restaurants with stars, ranging from one to three, for exceptional cuisine.

In the UK, there are currently 152 restaurants with Michelin stars. This is up from 144 in 2019 and 127 in 2018. Of these establishments, 44 have earned one star each while six have gained two stars and two have achieved the highest accolade of three stars.

London is home to the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK with 58 establishments earning at least one star. The next most popular city is Birmingham with 13 starred establishments followed by Edinburgh (9) and Glasgow (7). Outside of England, Wales has 4 starred restaurants while Scotland boasts 12.

The two restaurants awarded three stars are The Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire and The Fat Duck in Bray also. Both are owned by Heston Blumenthal and have held a total of seven Michelin stars between them since 2005.

In conclusion, there are currently 152 Michelin star restaurants located throughout the UK. The majority can be found in London but there are also a number of establishments located outside of England that have been recognised for their outstanding cuisine. Two of these have even achieved an unprecedented three-star rating from the prestigious guidebook.
