Is There a Filipino Restaurant With a Michelin Star?

The Philippines is a country known for its vibrant and diverse cuisine. With its mix of Spanish, Chinese, and native influences, Filipino food has become popular around the world. But is there a Filipino restaurant with a Michelin star?

The Michelin Guide is the most prestigious guide to restaurants in the world, awarding stars to restaurants that exemplify exceptional quality in food, service, and atmosphere. For a restaurant to be awarded one or more Michelin stars is a special honor that can bring great attention and acclaim from the culinary world.

Unfortunately, there are currently no Filipino restaurants with a Michelin star. The closest any restaurant in the Philippines has come to achieving this honor is when Chef Margarita Fores of Cibo di M was awarded one of the Michelin Plate awards in 2019. The Michelin Plate award is given to restaurants that demonstrate good cooking techniques and serve high-quality ingredients without necessarily meeting all of the criteria for a full Michelin star.

Despite not having any restaurants with Michelin stars, the Philippines has been home to some of Asia’s top chefs. Chefs such as Robby Goco of Cyma Greek Taverna and JP Anglo of Sarsa Kitchen + Bar have received worldwide recognition for their innovative takes on traditional Filipino dishes.

In recent years, more and more Filipino restaurants have opened up around the world offering diners authentic Filipino cuisine. These eateries have been popping up in cities such as London, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and even Tokyo where diners can enjoy dishes such as lechon (roasted pork), adobo (braised pork or chicken), lumpia (spring rolls), kare kare (oxtail stew) and much more!

Conclusion: Is there a Filipino restaurant with a Michelin star? Unfortunately not yet but there are plenty of excellent Filipino restaurants around the world offering delicious and authentic cuisine that has been recognized by top chefs from all over Asia. While it may take some time before we see any Filipino restaurant receive this prestigious honor, it’s clear that Filipino cuisine is making its mark on the international culinary scene.
