Is There Any Michelin Star Restaurants in India?

The Michelin Guide, created by the French tire company, is a series of annual guide books that award top restaurants with the prestigious Michelin stars. The accolade is one of the most coveted awards in the culinary world and denotes excellent quality of food and service. Many world-famous chefs have achieved multiple Michelin stars for their restaurants, but a much lesser-known fact is that there are Michelin starred restaurants in India as well.

Mumbai’s iconic Indian Accent is the only Indian restaurant to have been awarded a Michelin star so far. Indian Accent is part of The Manor hotel chain, owned by Satya Bajaj.

It has earned its place in the illustrious list of establishments that have been awarded at least one Michelin star. Indian Accent serves traditional Indian fare with some unique twists, such as their signature Lobster Tandoori and Chocolate Samosa. It has earned rave reviews from critics and diners alike.

In addition to Mumbai’s Indian Accent, two other establishments in India have been given one star each by the Michelin Guide. These are La Porte des Indes in Bengaluru and Amethyst in Chennai.

La Porte des Indes offers an extensive array of authentic French-Indian dishes, which combine classic French cuisine with regional Indian flavours. Amethyst in Chennai features a modern take on regional South-Indian cuisine, offering some innovative dishes such as their Ghee Roast Lamb.

The number of Michelin starred restaurants in India may be small, but it is growing steadily. In 2018, three more establishments were added to the list – Orient Express at Taj Coromandel Hotel in Chennai; Le Cirque Signature at The Leela Ambience Gurugram Hotel & Residences; and Savya Rasa at ITC Royal Gardenia Bengaluru.

Conclusion:

Yes, there are indeed a few Michelin Star Restaurants present in India. Currently there are seven such establishments which are located across cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Gurugram. Although these places offer world class cooking and hospitality services yet they remain relatively unknown due to lack of exposure or recognition within the country or abroad.
