Fast food restaurants are convenient, quick and often inexpensive. Unfortunately, they’re not known for their health benefits.
Most fast food items are loaded with calories, unhealthy fats and sodium. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find something healthy at a fast food restaurant.
For breakfast, many fast food restaurants offer breakfast sandwiches with egg whites and Canadian bacon or lean ham on a whole wheat English muffin or flatbread. Oatmeal with fresh fruit is also available at some places.
For lunch and dinner, grilled chicken sandwiches or salads topped with grilled chicken can be satisfying options. Avoid fried items such as chicken nuggets and French fries. If burgers are your thing, opt for a veggie burger instead of a regular hamburger or cheeseburger.
If you’re looking for sides, consider ordering an unsweetened iced tea or water instead of soda. Side salads are usually a healthier option than fries. You may also be able to find fresh fruit cups, yogurt parfaits or vegetable sticks with hummus dip.
Fast food restaurants can offer some healthy choices if you know what to look for. You’ll have the best chance of finding something nutritious if you opt for grilled meats over fried items, salads over french fries and water over soda.
