Are There Michelin Star Restaurants in Africa?

When it comes to fine dining, Michelin-starred restaurants are renowned for their high-quality cuisine and great service. But do these restaurants extend to the African continent? The answer is yes, there are now several Michelin-Starred restaurants in Africa.

The first African restaurant to receive a Michelin star was La Colombe in South Africa. Located in the Constantia Valley outside of Cape Town, La Colombe offers innovative French-style cuisine with a modern twist.

Their menu showcases locally sourced ingredients, as well as exotic flavors from around the world. The restaurant is also known for its impressive wine list, which features some of the best vintages from around South Africa.

Since La Colombe’s debut on the prestigious Michelin Guide in 2011, other African countries have followed suit with their own acclaimed restaurants. In Morocco, Chef Yannick Alléno has opened Restaurant Alléno Paris Marrakech in the city’s Royal Mansour Hotel.

This venue has been praised for its exquisite French dishes and exquisite presentation. Similarly, Chef Mourad Mazouz’s Derrière restaurant in Marrakech also earned a star for its unique blend of traditional Moroccan cuisine and modern European influences.

In Kenya, two Nairobi eateries have made quite a splash on the culinary scene: Seven Seafood & Grill and Artcaffe Lavington Green were both awarded one Michelin star each in 2018 for their outstanding menus featuring fresh seafood and local produce prepared with traditional African flavors. Other noteworthy restaurants include Cape Town’s The Test Kitchen and Marrakesh’s Nomad which both boast two stars each on the prestigious guidebook’s list of top international venues.

It is clear that African cuisine is no longer relegated to street stalls and locals’ homes but that it can now be found at some of the most acclaimed dining establishments across the continent. While there may not be many Michelin-starred restaurants yet, it is certainly exciting to see this trend gaining traction as more chefs embrace new techniques and flavors from across Africa while still honoring traditional cooking methods.

To conclude, while there are still relatively few Michelin Star Restaurants located throughout Africa compared to Europe or North America, there are some truly exceptional eateries that showcase African cuisine at its finest — proving that this continent’s culinary offerings can definitely compete with global standards when it comes to fine dining experiences!
