Do Any Australian Chefs Have a Michelin Star?

Australia is home to a vast array of talented chefs, and many of them have made their mark on the international culinary scene. But do any Australian chefs have a Michelin star? The answer is yes, several of Australia’s top chefs have achieved the lofty accolade.

One of Australia’s most celebrated chefs with a Michelin star is Ben Shewry from Melbourne. Shewry began his career at various restaurants in Europe, before returning to Australia to take up the helm of Attica in 2005, which has since become one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Australia. In 2011, Shewry was awarded his first Michelin star for Attica, making him the first Australian chef to achieve such an accolade.

Another top Australian chef with a Michelin star is Peter Gilmore from Sydney. Gilmore began his career at Quay restaurant in Sydney before moving on to become the head chef at Bennelong restaurant in 2007. Gilmore was awarded his first Michelin star for Bennelong in 2013, making him only the second Australian chef at that time to be honoured with such an accolade.

More recently, Jock Zonfrillo from Adelaide became only the third Australian chef to be awarded a Michelin star when he achieved it for Orana restaurant in 2019. Zonfrillo began his career working at some of the world’s finest restaurants before opening Orana in 2013 and has since been recognised as one of Australia’s leading chefs.
