How Many Indian Chefs Have a Michelin Star?

India has long been renowned for its incredible cuisine, and Indian chefs have become increasingly popular on the global stage. However, despite their growing popularity, relatively few Indian chefs have achieved the coveted Michelin star.

The Michelin Guide is an annual guide to fine dining and the world’s best restaurants. It has been awarding stars since 1926, and today it is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the culinary arts. Michelin stars are given to restaurants that demonstrate exceptional quality in terms of food, service, and atmosphere.

India has a rich culinary heritage and many world-renowned chefs. Yet only a handful of Indian chefs have earned a Michelin star.

The most notable among them is Gaggan Anand from Bangalore, who was awarded two stars in 2017 for his eponymous restaurant Gaggan. He is the first Indian chef to ever receive a Michelin star.

Chef Atul Kochhar from London was also awarded a Michelin star in 2001 for his restaurant Benares. He has been credited with introducing modern Indian cuisine to a wider audience.

More recently, Vineet Bhatia became the third Indian chef to receive a Michelin star when his Mumbai-based restaurant Rasoi by Vineet was awarded one in 2020. He is credited with revolutionizing modern Indian cuisine.

Conclusion: Despite India’s long culinary history and many talented chefs, only three Indian chefs have received Michelin stars so far — Gaggan Anand, Atul Kochhar, and Vineet Bhatia — highlighting just how difficult it is to achieve such an esteemed recognition.
