When Did Canned Food Start?

The invention of canned food can be traced all the way back to the early 19th century. In 1809, a French confectioner by the name of Nicolas Appert was awarded a prize for developing the first method of preserving food in airtight containers.

Appert had been experimenting with various methods of preserving food, including boiling it in glass bottles and submerging it in boiling water. His breakthrough came when he placed food in tin-plated iron cans and sealed them using a cork and wax seal.

The invention of canned foods revolutionized the food industry and allowed for foods to be preserved for long periods of time without spoiling. This allowed for a much wider variety of foods to become widely available, as well as making it easier to transport these goods from one place to another.

The first commercially produced canned foods were fruits and vegetables, which allowed people to enjoy fresh produce even when it wasn’t in season. Over time, other types of canned goods such as soups, meats and fish were developed by various companies throughout Europe and North America.

In 1847, Henry Evans patented a machine which could manufacture cans at an impressive rate – up to 60 cans per minute! This invention led to a huge expansion in the production of canned goods and made them much more affordable and accessible for everyday consumers.

Since then, canned food has continued to evolve with advances in technology leading to improved taste and increased safety standards. Today, most Supermarkets carry an extensive range of canned goods allowing us access to a wide variety of different ingredients from all over the world.

Conclusion:

Canned food has revolutionized the way we consume food since its invention by Nicolas Appert in 1809. The invention of Henry Evans’ canning machine enabled mass production which made these products more affordable and accessible for everyday consumers. Today we continue to benefit from advances in technology which have improved taste and safety standards while giving us access to a vast array of ingredients from around the globe – proving that canned food is here to stay!
