Do You Lose a Michelin Star When You Die?

The Michelin star is an accolade that the world’s top restaurants strive to achieve. It is a highly sought after award, but what happens when the chef responsible for achieving it dies? Does the restaurant lose its Michelin star?

The answer is both yes and no. Many people assume that when a chef dies, the Michelin star is automatically revoked. However, this is not always the case.

The awarding of stars is based on the quality of food served and whether or not standards have been maintained. If a restaurant continues to serve food of an equal or higher standard than when it was awarded its stars, then it will keep them.

This means that if the chef has trained staff who can continue to serve the same high-quality cuisine, then there is a good chance the restaurant will continue with its star rating. Similarly, if there are new chefs in place who are able to uphold the same level of excellence as their predecessor then again, there should be no problems keeping their Michelin stars.

However, if standards drop significantly due to a lack of experience or resources then it would likely lead to a loss of one or more stars. The Michelin Guide inspectors visit all establishments regardless of whether they have been awarded one or more stars and they will downgrade accordingly if standards have dropped since their last visit.

It should also be noted that when a chef dies, their name may remain on any awards given out by Michelin. This does not mean that they still hold responsibility for these awards though; all responsibility for maintaining standards now lies with any new chefs in place.

In conclusion, while it may seem like restaurants lose all their Michelin stars upon the death of their head chefs, this isn’t necessarily true. If there are other chefs in place who can maintain high levels of quality in cuisine and service then chances are that any existing awards will stay in place. However, if standards do drop significantly following a head chef’s death then restaurants could find themselves losing some or all of their stars very quickly indeed.
